This is an unofficial translation of Russia's National Security Strategy to 2020 published in May 2009. The document discusses Russia's role in the modern world and its national interests. It provides the ideas how to ensure the national security and outlines the organizational, legal-normative and informational foundations for a strategy. The definition of national security is thereby not confined to 'hard security', but includes, besides the state, public security and strategic partnerships also indicators concerning the quality of life of Russian citizens, economic growth, science, technology and education, healthcare, culture and ecology.
