Belize’s National Security Strategy responds to threats to Belize’s security, such as the drug trade, corruption, and the breakdown of social systems. To restore faith in the justice system, the government plans to establish a joint intelligence unit that will concentrate on illegal activities nationwide in order to strengthen criminal intelligence gathering. Other measures include establishing a Conscious Youth Development Programme to control and diffuse gang violence. Finally, the government seeks to address non-traditional and transnational threats in a coordinated fashion.
