This report presents the basic principles of Latvian national security and defense policy. After reviewing the Latvian historic experience it discusses the structural developments of the national armed forces, the various kinds of national armed forces units, defense development planning, international co-operation and environmental protection. The report concludes that the development of the national defense system and armed forces must be purposively continued to ensure that Latvia becomes an equal member of NATO and is able to contribute considerably to the forming of the international security environment.
