ETH CSS Public Event: Global Nuclear Risks and Non-Proliferation: A View from the IAEA

A conversation with Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

(Updated: )

The IAEA supports the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in a safe and secure way and implements nuclear safeguards across the world. The organization helps to uphold the global nuclear non-proliferation regime but faces a number of challenges. Iran, in particular, has taken a number of steps to advance its nuclear program while complicating the agency’s verification and monitoring activities. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and seizure of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant also raises questions about ensuring nuclear safety and security including in times of war. These issues will be addressed in a conversation with the IAEA’s Director General, Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi.

Our guest:

Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi is the Director General of the IAEA since 2019. Dr. Grossi is a diplomat with almost 40 years of experience in the fields of non-proliferation and disarmament. Before assuming office as the IAEA’s Director General, Dr. Grossi served as the president-designate of the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), president of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Assistant Director General for Policy and Chief of Cabinet at the IAEA, and Chief of Cabinet at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). He has also held senior positions in the Argentinian Foreign Service, including as Political Affairs Director General, Head of Embassy in Belgium and Luxemburg, and Argentine Representative to NATO.

The event will be moderated by Prof. Steve Fetter, Professor at the University of Maryland and Visiting Senior Fellow at the CSS. Dr. Daniel Möckli, Head of the CSS Think Tank, will provide introductory remarks. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. Coffee and pastries will be served from 09.30 to 10.00 am, prior to the start of the event.
