ETH CSS Evening Talk: Ukraine, the US, and European Security

A conversation with Rose Gottemoeller

by Sophie Berdoz

Against the backdrop of the upcoming high-level conference on peace in Ukraine, this Evening Talk seeks to take stock of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the strategic rift in European security, and the US policy response to these developments. We will take a step back and ask both how this Zeitenwende in Europe came about and how it may further evolve, not least as we are approaching US presidential elections. Perceptions in Washington on Switzerland’s positioning and roles in this context will also be touched upon. These issues will be addressed in a conversation with Rose Gottemoeller, an acknowledged US expert on Eurasia, transatlantic security, and arms control with a distinguished career in government.

Our guest:

Rose Gottemoeller is a lecturer at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University and a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. She served as NATO's Deputy Secretary General from 2016 to 2019 and prior to that as Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security at the U.S. Department of State. She played a pivotal role as the chief U.S. negotiator for the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with Russia. Other previous functions include director of the Carnegie Moscow Center and deputy director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. She had also served on the National Security Council in the White House as director for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasian Affairs, with responsibility for denuclearization in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus.

The event will be moderated by Dr Daniel Möckli, Head of the CSS Think Tank. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A with the audience. Afterwards, everyone is invited to deepen the discussions over an apéro.
