Lennart Maschmeyer is a Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich. His current book project focuses on the subversive nature of cyber conflict and its strategic consequences. In particular, his research examines how technological change has altered the quality of subversion by comparing traditional subversion to contemporary ‘cyber subversion’. As part of this project, Lennart is also engaged in an expansive empirical study examining the efficacy of disinformation campaigns via social media vis-à-vis traditional media. A second pillar of Lennart’s research agenda critically examines knowledge production processes in cybersecurity and resulting bias and distortions.

In 2020, Lennart founded the external page FIRST Threat Intel Coalition, a volunteer-driven initiative to improve civil society’s access to threat intelligence and provide assistance against cyber attacks. He is also the founder and co-chair of the external page European Cybersecurity Seminar, which brings together academics and practitioners in cybersecurity and provides them a platform to present research projects and receive feedback.

Lennart holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto and an M.Phil in International Relations from the University of Oxford. He previously held fellowships at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab and at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
