Markus Geray is a PhD candidate at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich. He holds both a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Public Administration from the University of Konstanz, Germany. During his Master’s, he specialised in International Administration and Conflict Management as well as in Methods of the Social Sciences. He spent parts of his studies at Sciences Po Bordeaux and at Uppsala University.

Prior to entering the PhD program, Markus gained work experience with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Peace Information Service (IPIS) and the German Development Institute. For IPIS, among other things, he was involved in a research project on the small and artisanal mining sector in Eastern Congo. During his undergraduate studies, he was also working as a peer educator in schools for the State Agency of Civic Education of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

In his research, Markus studies how roadblocks structure the relationships between armed actors and the local population in fragmented conflicts.
