Markus Geray is a PhD candidate at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich. In his research, Markus studies the formation of civilian combatant relations in armed conflicts. He employs both qualitative and quantitative methods and has conducted field research in eastern Congo’s South Kivu province. Besides his research activities, he is actively involved in the scientific staff association at his department.
He holds both a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Public Administration from the University of Konstanz, Germany. During his Master’s, he specialised in International Administration and Conflict Management as well as in Methods of the Social Sciences. He spent parts of his studies at Sciences Po Bordeaux and at Uppsala University. Prior to entering the PhD program, Markus gained work experience with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Peace Information Service (IPIS) and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS).
