On 4-5 September 2017, high-level eyewitnesses and contemporary historians discussed lessons learned from the preparation of the CSCE Charter of Paris (November 1990) for the ongoing conflict between Russia and the West at the Oral History Workshop „The Road to the Paris Charter“. Eyewitnesses included Adam Daniel Rotfeld (Poland), Marianne von Grünigen (Switzerland), Anatolii Adamishin (Russia), John J. Maresca (US), Pierre Morel (France), Wilhelm Höynck (Germany), and Markku Reimaa (Finland). They reflected together with historians such as Tom Blanton, Svetlana Savranskaya, Ian Anthony, Frédéric Bozo, Andrei Zagorski, Juhana Aunesluoma or Laurien Crump-Gabreëls missed opportunities to build a more stable, more inclusive pan-European security architecture during the annus mirrabilis of 1989-90. The workshop took place in Paris within the framework of the “Historical Narratives” project (coordinated by Christian Nünlist and Juhana Aunesluoma) of the OSCE Network of Think Tanks. It was hosted by the Institut français des relations internationales (ifri) in Paris. The narrative project is financially supported by the foreign ministries of Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Slovakia.
