This paper is written for policy makers and conflict transformation practitioners working on conflicts with religious dimensions. It aims to support policy and practice by providing a conceptual framework to strengthen analysis of the role that religion plays in conflict. It draws both on academic writing on the nature of religion, and accounts of conflict transformation initiatives, to propose a framework that is a useful balance between academic complexity and the simplicity necessary for it to be of practical application. Richard Friedli has also published an article in German that offers a summary of this publication.
