This paper analyzes coal use and clean coal technology debates in the US and China. The author argues that both, although highly reliant on coal as an energy source, have failed to fully account for its societal and environmental costs and develop clean coal technologies. The author suggests that the US and China should leverage their complementary knowledge and expertise to guarantee a clean and reliable energy supply in the future.
