This paper seeks to evaluate the state of EU-Russian relations by providing an overview of the political and economic situation in Russia. Despite some positive changes, the authors paint a disquieting image of Russia's situation. There is considerable concern with regard to authoritarian trends and the country's political instability, as well as the persistence of corruption and the lack of reform. The authors examine the institutional framework and the common spaces of the relationship and try to give an outlook on the future. They conclude that a strategic partnership is only possible if both sides accept common values.
