The NPT alone is not the only block to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, but it is considered to be the cornerstone of the nuclear nonproliferation regime. Today, the Treaty has 184 NNWS – all the states in existence that do not have nuclear weapons. Between the moment when the NPT entered into force in 1970, and today, only one country–North Korea–has abandoned the Treaty.
