The announcement by UK Chancellor George Osborne that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) will have to fund the capital costs of replacing the Trident system from its own core budget has forced MoD to face the reality of the costs of replacement. It has also reignited a public debate about whether the country needs and can afford a like-for-like replacement of the current system.
