This paper investigates urbanization and vulnerability in the Nyala region of Sudan. It forms part of a study aimed at deepening understanding of the drivers of urbanization in different parts of the country, in relation to the broader economic, political and security context. It analyzes the consequences of rapid urbanization, socially, economically (paying particular attention to urban livelihoods) and environmentally, and in terms of urban infrastructure and the provision of services. It assesses the implications of rapid urbanization in terms of the vulnerability of urban populations to future hazards and shocks, as well as development opportunities. Finally, it identifies how the international aid community can best engage with changing settlement patterns in Sudan, and the implications for humanitarian and development programming in the future.
