In this paper, the author reviews Iran’s nuclear program, the stated positions of the leading protagonists and the intervening roles played by the IAEA and the European Union. He concludes by acknowledging the positive outcome of the EU initiative, which offers some encouragement to the IAEA efforts to bring Iran into full compliance with non-proliferation norms for non-nuclear weapons states under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. A more critical tone is adopted towards the handling of those states remaining outside the provisions of the NPT and to nuclear weapons states own contribution to nuclear proliferation.
