This paper examines the complex political situation facing Bangladesh as it approaches its 2013 election. The multiparty system has deep rivalries between the government and opposition coalitions, particularly since the decision to abandon the caretaker system during the country's elections. The author claims that the campaign is occurring amid the backdrop of strong domestic economic growth and an expanding role for public policy. Nonetheless, the economy faces risks due to poor infrastructure and corruption. The paper expects these economic and political factors to influence the choice of an election date.
