This commentary discusses issues related to intelligence gathering and the protection of privacy in the information age. The author suggests that revelations about the US National Security Agency's PRISM pose questions about the proper roles of government and corporations in collecting and analyzing personal information. He concludes by asking how citizens and officials can judge the worth of programs such as PRISM in relation to their privacy when governments will not inform citizens about such programs.
