This commentary discusses conflicting views on the US defense budget between the two candidates of the 2012 presidential election: Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Although national security has not been a major component of the election campaign’s early stages, the author predicts that it will undoubtedly become a critical element of comparison between the two contenders as the campaign heats up in summer 2012. The author concludes that the election campaign constitutes a perfect opportunity to pose serious questions to the country as to what role the US should play in the world.
