This brief discusses some of the relevant foreign policy principles that inform China's engagement with Central Asian countries. The author uses policy statements and rhetoric as well as significant Chinese economic and security interventions to examine the reasons behind Beijing's engagement in the region. The paper ends with some tentative conclusions and an assessment of the challenges that the China-Central Asia relationship will face in the future.
