This brief looks at Russia's key interests, policy initiatives and engagement in Central Asia. The author argues that Russia seems likely to remain for now the most prominent external power in Central Asia in terms of its high-level political relationships, security cooperation in the region, and range of investment projects. He concludes with some tentative predictions of the challenges that Russia will face in its dealings with Central Asian countries.
