The author of this paper recounts his experience as a communications professor in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) immediately before and during the Arab Spring uprisings - a position he lost without explanation. His observations reveal a tension between the Gulf countries’ will to educate their citizens on international standards and media freedom and their actions to hinder this. He argues that this situation has worsened with the outbreak of the Arab Spring.
