This paper looks at Russia’s early 2014 intervention in Ukraine, which it suggests is only the first step in a larger expansionist strategy by Putin. The authors argue Putin’s attempt to justify his moves through the use of term ‘Novorossiya’, referring to territories Imperial Russia conquered in the 18th century, is historically inaccurate in its extensiveness and that, he has his sights on areas in which Russian is the dominant language but not ethnicity. The paper also examines the implications of Moscow's strategy for Moldova and what the West can do to counter it.
