This paper summarizes a conference on data and statistical measures of governance, peace and security in African states, held at the African Union in June 2014. Among other things, participants at the conference 1) reviewed the formulation of peace, governance, and rule of law targets as proposed by the UN’s Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals; 2) proposed measurable and relevant indicators for this area; and 3) discussed emerging innovative data collection methods.
