This brief discusses Kenya's regional relations and why the country has not been able to convert its economic strengths into regional political influence. The author first provides an overview of Kenya's historical regional relations, its relations with South Africa, and its intervention in Somalia, which marked a fundamental change from its traditional low-risk regional engagement policy. He then argues that if Kenya wants to increase its leverage in regional politics, it needs to strengthen bilateral relations, foster regional integration and support strategic partnerships.
