This brief looks at South Africa's foreign policy towards Zimbabwe since the latter's July 2013 elections and speculates on what it says about Pretoria's economic diplomacy. In particular, the brief 1) examines the reasons why Pretoria decided to play down the irregularities in the elections and endorse the victory of Zanu-PF, and 2) concludes that South Africa’s decision highlights how its economic diplomacy has not progressed much beyond the promotion of trade and investment.
