This paper explains the concept and practice of ‘community security’, a bottom-up approach that empowers communities, authorities and security providers to work together to find local solutions to the security problems they face. It then explains how this approach works in Bangladesh drawing on lessons learned and best practices from Saferworld and BRAC’s (Building Resources Across Communities) mid-term community security program review. Finally, it provides recommendations for policymakers on how they can contribute to lasting peace and security in the country.
