This brief examines the potential for greater levels of cooperation between China and the US on supporting peace and security in Africa, as well as the factors which inhibit this cooperation. It suggests that, in order to achieve greater levels of collaboration, the US and China should 1) accept a broadened definition of security and focus on non-traditional security challenges and non-combat operations that offer opportunity without the connotation of military-to-military support or intervention; 2) prioritize African perspectives; and 3) deepen mutual understanding and promotion of knowledge exchange on conflict-sensitive development and the management of conflict, crises.
