This brief lays out a number of guiding principles and recommendations for the UK's 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). The SDSR should, for example, 1) stress root causes-based forms of conflict prevention; 2) reconsider the UK's 'hard security' responses to political problems, such as the causes of extremism; 3) promote responsible arms transfer controls; 4) account for the global impact UK initiatives and decision making can have; 5) improve the country's work on gender, peace and security issues; 6) uphold the integrity of UK aid programs; 7) ensure consistency in conflict-related policies and practices; and 8) strengthen the UK's strategic partnerships.
