This paper discusses the strategic foreign policy approaches taken towards the Middle East by the Russian government under President Vladimir Putin and by the US Obama administration. In particular, the author 1) discusses Russia's 2015 intervention in the ongoing civil war in Syria and how this ties in with Moscow's wider foreign policy aims; and 2) provides a critical account of President Obama's strategic foreign policy towards the Middle East during his time in office.
