This paper discusses the Afghan president Ghani's request to China to help Afghanistan reach a peace agreement with Pakistan. The author first highlights the key features of China's foreign policy, and then contextualizes Afghanistan in that foreign policy calculus. He concludes that Afghan expectations of Chinese involvement are likely to remain unmet as China usually deploys hands-off policies abroad.
