This paper documents developments in German ICT industries. The authors focus on results of spatial patterns in innovation and employment in these industries. They distinguish between the production of ICT devices and production of ICT services and argue that, in Germany, the production of ICT devices is concentrated in clusters of innovating regions (in terms of patents). ICT service production, on the other hand, is concentrated in larger urban areas. The authors conclude that for overall economic development - in terms of gross regional product per habitant - weak positive growth impacts ICT. But, these effects stem more from innovation than from production or use of ICT.
