This article presents an informational theory of endogenous election timing in which leaders have private information about likely future outcomes. All other things being equal, the author argues that the earlier elections are called, the stronger the signal of future decline and the less robust support for the incumbent becomes. He presents his analysis of leader support, which shows that leaders who try to opportunistically cash in on recent success see their public support erode.
