This paper explores osteological data to investigate the distribution of nutrition, and by extension, the distribution of political power and economic wealth. On the basis of the data, the authors find that the shift from a hunter-gatherer to a labor-intensive agriculture opened up inequalities which had an effect on human health and stature whereas political institutions were shaped by economic factors and military technology.
