This volume includes five policy briefs that explore Japan’s complex balancing act between its short-term need for nuclear deterrence and long-term desire for global nuclear disarmament. More specifically, the articles focus on 1) why it is not in Japan’s interests to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW); 2) how a deteriorating security environment in East Asia has affected nuclear deterrence and disarmament, and Japan’s security policy by extension; 3) the international community’s response to India and Pakistan’s emergence as nuclear states, and what lessons learned Japan can draw from this analysis to inform its approach to North Korea, and more.
