This paper examines Turkmenistan’s importance in the race for influence in Central Asia, focusing on energy issues. It considers the stakes and interests of the major actors: Russia, the US, China and the EU and looks at changes in Turkmenistan after President Niyazov’s death. The authors state that Russia's monopoly over Turkmen gas exports will be broken with the completion of the pipeline connecting Turkmenistan and China.
