In early February, US President Donald Trump threatened to terminate the INF treaty, thirty years on from its signing. This announcement has come at a time when the geopolitical rivalry among major powers is intensifying and as global nuclear forces are modernizing their arsenals. Arms control, once a popular idea during the Cold War, is about to come to a complete standstill. This article by Oliver Thränert analyzes the risks of this development. It also argues that policy makers should try to preserve the few remaining arms control treaties while, simultaneously, strategically reviving the debate about nuclear arms control.
