ETH Workshop: "Strategic Trends 2023"
On April 28, 2023, the Center for Security Studies (CSS) presented the "Strategic Trends 2023" as part of the ETH workshop on security policy on the topic "World Politics in 2023".
The annual "Strategic Trends" publication series was presented by the CSS on April 28 this year. Since 2010, it has analyzed key global political developments with a focus on international security issues. This year's workshop comprised two expert panels.
During the first panel, the authors each presented their respective chapters. First, CSS' Brian Carlson introduced his section by arguing that, despite recent setbacks, the concept of a liberal international order remains valuable in addressing the challenges posed by China and Russia.
Second, CSS' Sophie-Charlotte Fischer demonstrated her analysis of US efforts to deny China access to critical technology and know-how through internationally coordinated export controls.
Third, CSS' Névine Schepers explained her section on how a deteriorating global security environment and increasing nuclear threats highlight the important role of extended nuclear deterrence in alliance relationships.
At last, CSS' Boas Lieberherr presented his examination of India's foreign policy arguing that New Delhi seeks to avoid overdependence on any country while leveraging partnerships in the pursuit of security and status as an emerging great power.
Throughout the second panel, Linda Maduz, Asia Program Manager at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, journalists Hans-Jürgen Maurus (Sonntagszeitung and Deutschlandfunk) and Sebastian Ramspeck (Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen), and Marina Wyss Ross, Head of Arms Control, Disarmament and Cybersecurity at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, discussed the current global political situation and its challenges for Switzerland.
