Will globalization, communications advances and disruptive technology undermine NATO’s military technological superiority? This policy brief addresses this question in an analysis of military-technological competition in the past and present. Insights include that the technological challenges of developing traditional weapon systems are high for NATO rivals such as China and Russia, and that hybrid and unconventional approaches are likely a second-best-strategy. NATO should maximize its competitive advantage and work towards integrating future technologies into their force structure.
