UN peace missions, which include peacekeeping operations, special political missions, and good offices engagements, are the main instrument of the UN to promote peace around the world. They are central to the lives of people in conflict contexts who are affected by violence. The decision on whether, where, and when to deploy a peace mission is taken by the UN Security Council. As an elected member of the UN Security Council for the years 2023 and 2024, Switzerland contributes to discussions and decisions on UN peace missions. But even before their membership, Switzerland has supported UN peace missions through civilian and military personnel, expertise, and training for several decades.

With this exhibition, we seek to contribute to debates around UN peace missions and Switzerland’s role in them. Based on a five-year research project hosted at the Geneva Graduate Institute and ETH Zurich and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the exhibition examines key questions such as:

  • What role can the UN play in promoting peace in a world marked by increasing competition between states?
  • 75 years after the first peace mission was deployed to the Middle East, what lessons have we learned?
  • What do people from contexts to which UN peace missions are deployed think about them?

Additionally, the exhibition features videos with experts sharing their knowledge on UN peace missions and presents the latest research findings on this subject.

The UN Peace Missions App is based on the UNPMM. It allows you to go through the data by selecting location, date, and mandate task filters. It also provides a range of additional resources, including a list of definitions guiding the data collection and analysis; the digital version of a pop-up exhibition displayed in four major cities in Switzerland between 2023 and 2024; an interactive quiz to test your knowledge; and a list of relevant publications to go further on the topic.
