The roles of the Defence Forces of Ireland are to defend the State against armed aggression; to aid the civil power; to participate in multinational peace support, crisis management and humanitarian relief operations; to provide a fishery protection service in accordance with EU obligations; and to carry out other ad hoc duties such as search and rescue or Ministerial air transport service.
