The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a permanent intergovernmental body which was formed in 2001. The primary goals of the SCO are to 1) strengthen mutual confidence and neighborly relations among its member states; 2) promote effective cooperation in politics, trade, science and technology, culture and education, energy and transportation, tourism, environmental protection and other fields; 3) maintain and ensure peace, security and stability in the SCO region; and 4) establish a new, democratic, just and rational political and economic international order.
