The International Whaling Commission (IWC) was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. The duties of the IWC include reviewing the measures laid down in the Convention which govern the conduct of whaling throughout the world. These measures include protection of certain species and designation of specified areas as whale sanctuaries. In addition, the Commission encourages whale research and publishes its results.
