Of all the zones of conflict in the larger Caucasus area, the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over mountainous Karabakh is one of the most complex, dangerous, and difficult to solve. The essays contained in this issue look at the history and politics behind the conflict, analyzing how the past is being used and abused by the conflicting sides in order to justify their claims to this contested land.
