Mediation Support Team

The CSS Mediation Support Team seeks to develop and promote mediation methodology for dealing with violent political conflicts. Through research, training and direct process support, the team assists mediators and negotiators in improving mediation, conflict transformation and peace promotion efforts.

The team’s work is organized into three thematic areas: Mediation in Peace Processes, Religion and Mediation and Environment, Development, and Human Security.

The team members work closely with the team of the MAS "Mediation in Peace Processes" program, as well as with CSS Senior Researchers Kit Rickard and Julia Palmiano Federer, and with Allard Duursma, Assistant Professor and Head of the Research Group on Conflict Management and International Relations at ETH Zurich.

The team's area of expertise includes, among others, Kenya, Colombia, Mozambique, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Switzerland, Somalia, Sudan, and Syria.

The team offers two annual courses: the Peace Mediation Course (with swisspeace and the Swiss FDFA) and the Religion and Mediation Course (with Swiss FDFA). In addition it regularly designs and delivers tailor-made workshops and trainings with a range of institutional partners, both international (e.g. UN, OSCE), governmental (e.g. Norway, Switzerland) and non-governmental (e.g. Cordoba Foundation Geneva, Zimbabwe Peace and Security Program).
