This report looks at the evolving status of Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATAs), a region that has been a hotbed of militancy and insurgency since 2002. More specifically, the piece highlights 1) the area’s unique status within Pakistan; 2) the Pakistan government’s plans to integrate the FATA into the neighboring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and bring about constitutional, legal, political and socioeconomic reform in the region; 3) why previous attempts at reform in the FATA failed; and 4) the key hurdles that Pakistan must address to implement the planned reforms and bring the semi-autonomous region into parity with the rest of the country.
