This paper focuses on the linguistic diversity of Georgia and the issue of preserving those regional or minority languages that are in danger of falling into disuse. The first part of the paper looks at ways of protecting all these languages through the mechanisms provided by Part II of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML). The author identifies the main challenge as being to promote their use in public life without undermining Georgian as the state language or impeding the integration of the Azeri and Armenian minorities into Georgian public life.
