This brief summarizes the issues discussed at a United States Institute for Peace (USIP) workshop on the challenges surrounding conducting elections in the Darfur region of Sudan. It begins by questioning whether elections in Darfur are feasible and what could reasonably be achieved. The author then discusses the problematic situation of the millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs), with their potential disenfranchisement and lack of influence leading to little incentive to participate. The paper concludes with recommendations for ensuring elections are as free, fair and as inclusive as possible.
