This publication examines the past, present and future of bilateral relations between North Korea and Japan. Writing between a long-range missile launch and a nuclear test by North Korea, the author expects no normal relations be established between North Korea and Japan for a long time. The analysis is focused on two issues: the abduction of Japanese citizens by Korea in the 1970s; and North Korea's nuclear and missile program. The author considers the wider international context in which the relationship evolves, including the Six-Party Talks and the role of the US.
