This 2001 report reviews and evaluates recent and ongoing programs in high energy laser (HEL) applications, examines recent supporting technology advancements, and determines what remains to be done to weaponize such systems in combat theater environments. The report provides recommendations concerning additional DoD research efforts, strategic and tactical impact of HEL systems on future military operations, and capabilities of the US defense industrial base to support development of HEL systems. The authors concluded that high power lasers have the potential to change future military operations in dramatic ways.
