The paper discusses South Korea’s need for a new strategy to manage the trilateral relationship with China and Japan. The author argues that this strategy must address the deteriorating state of the relationship between China and Japan. It should also address US skepticism about China-led regionalism and about South Korea’s aspirations to conduct its foreign policy autonomously. He concludes that, as a middle power between assertive competitors, South Korea must tread cautiously and pay special attention to shaping the trilateral relationship with China and Japan.
